About Class or Why Are We Doing This?
We are not here solely to read fiction or write papers about far away subjects. We are here to develop our critical thinking, reading, and writing abilities. These three abilities give us the power to create and own our identities, question our place in the world, and question the norms of the world, as a whole. Why is that important? It is important because when we harness our knowledge and our education, we can change the world as we see fit. What a gift.
Developing the skills needed to change the world is a big undertaking.
As such, there are a few classroom expectations. These expectations are:
1. Develop Our Community. Thought does not exist in a vacuum. Dialogue is necessary to authentic learning and community is essential to dialogue.
2. Question Everything. Question what you read (highlight, annotate, predict, draw conclusions), assert your own opinion, question each other and me (why do you think that? where is your proof?).
3. Learn Like Your Hair Is On Fire. Remember you have access to free education. According to the U.N., 57 million children do not have a school to go to. You do. Take advantage. Be on time, be prepared, and be excited.
Hello! I will be your English teacher this year. I am stoked. I love learning, books, discussion, writing, editing, and all things art.
I graduated in May 2016 with a Master's Degree in Education from University of Arizona. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Arizona State University. I am a house divided.
I do not expect anything of students that I do not expect of myself. I promise to show up everyday ready to teach like my hair is on fire. Education is a journey we will be taking together and I am so grateful for the honor of sharing your path. Since our path is shared, feel free to reach out for assistance, to offer your opinions, and to direct the path of your education. I am here to teach you, but more importantly, to support you as you grow into the person you are meant to be. Let's expand our minds and use our learning to cause a ruckus.
